Ruth Bernhard, photographer, died at age 101 on December 18, 2006. This was especially poignant for me as she was a favorite of my erstwhile co-editor Tee Corinne. The photo selected for inclusion with the New York times obituary (Dec. 21) is straight-on and the reproduction almost looks a bit solarized, reminiscent of Tee’s work
Aaron Betsky became the director of the Cincinnati Museum of Art in fall 2006. He has written significantly on queer space and architecture and had been most recently director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute.
Laurie Toby Edison reports that the fall 2006 “Gender” issue of the Kyoto Journal was to include an article about her series “Women of Japan” with photographs and quotes from some of the models. Their writings are available in bilingual English and Japanese on Laurie’s website laurietobyedison.com. Her collaboration with Ctein “Nuclear reactor” took the Judges’ Prize at Worldcon in Los Angeles in August. Laurie was the featured artist on the GLBTQ Encyclopedia page at www.glbtq.com during December.
“Sanctus” by Barbara Hammer was screened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on 18 November 2006 as part of the Black Maria Festival Retrospective.
“Attenzione! Carrara 2003” by Rinaldo Hopf from his Amore was the cover illustration for the November/December issue of the Austrian gay magazine XTRA! www.xtra-news.at He was included in a group show at Ausstellungsraum Jürgen Bahr in Cologne.
The papers and artifacts of early gay activist Frank Kameny have been presented to the Library of Congress. The artifacts include the sign Kameny carried in April 1965 during the first gay rights demonstration in front of the White House.
Duane Michals will deliver the keynote address during the Convocation of the 2007 CAA Annual Conference in New York.
Linda Nochlin, Lila Acheson Wallace Professor of Modern Art at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, is the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar for the 2007 CAA Annual Conference. The Distinguished Scholar’s session will take place on Thursday afternoon.
Erica Rand’s The Ellis Island snow globe (Duke UP) was the recipient of the Alan Bray Memorial Book Award from the GL/Q Caucus of the Modern Language Association. The presentation was made during the MLA convention in Philadelphia, 28 December 2006.
“Borat did have his way with me in his movie” reports Linda Stein. Linda signed on in 2005 to help make a deadly sober documentary about the plight of women but ended up in the trailer for Baron Sacha Cohen’s movie “Borat: cultural leanings of America to make benefit glorious nation of Kazakhstan.”
