Queer Packaging/Body Commodities
June 2004 - Call to Artists
“Queer Packaging/Body Commodities” investigates the current phenomenon of sexualized identity and its visibility in a media-glutted America, whether that identity is referred to as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, or queer. What do the producers of a corporate mega-media aesthetic invest in to satiate American consumers? Are these images of fantasy or fetish and whom do they satisfy? How do they read for a public or body politic that seeks to address a social and political environment in transformation? Who is not included and what levels of inclusivity appear tolerable? What of the abject body and dystopic vision? We invite artists to respond and critique. We extend this critique to any form of American mass media.
WORKS/San Jose is a non-profit contemporary visual and performance art space dedicated to community involvement and the exploration of the artistic experience. WORKS provides artists and the community an opportunity to challenge and exchange cultural and artistic images and ideas. WORKS fosters emerging and established artists and curators who often have limited access to commercial spaces and large institutions.
